- We offer for the first time ever an easy solution to creating a
professionally designed outdoor lighting system in kit form,
personalized for your very own home. We have been working on this new
innovation for quite some time and have tested it, and proved to our
standards that it truly works with spectacular results.
- In order to participate in this new way of purchasing outdoor
lighting, designed by a certified lighting designer, without hiring one
to consult on your project is easy. Simply call in and request this
service from our friendly staff. A designer will guide you through the
process and we will need digital pictures of your home and grounds
emailed to us at,
- jim@accentlightingdesigns.com
- Kits can be designed for any type of lighting, and can if requested
contain all necessary installation items, as well as a drawing of the
site for installation purposes. Instructions for installation is
included.
- DIY stores, Contractors, Builders, Electricians and Landscapers, even
Showroom Salesmen do not know the science and art of lighting. Less is
more, especially out of doors where light pollution can be a legitimate
problem.
- We design for IDA requirements. Our systems feature minimum 10 year
fixture warranties. We design with Energy Star features in mind and
design with energy wise materials.
- In order to promote American made products most of our fixtures are
Made in the USA, or the parts are made in the USA and assembled in
Mexico. We are not fans of products made in China and rely on better
craftsmanship and materials to give our clients systems that will last
decades. Where ever possible, our materials do not come from Chinese
sources.

- Are there electrical codes for outdoor low voltage lighting? (Yes, check with your local
electrician to find out the codes in your area. The codes are much less
than those for 110V lighting but there are codes none the less in some
areas!)
- How many light fixtures can I place on one 12 Volt Transformer? (The number of fixtures you can put on
any transformer is equal to the number of watts the transformer is rated
for versus the number of watts your total light bulb wattage of your
fixtures equals!)
- How deep should I bury low voltage lighting cable? ( We suggest 6 inch minimum depth for
low voltage wire installations!)
- Should I put my low volt wire in conduit? (It is not necessary, unless going
into residences, that you shield or conduit low voltage landscape wire.
We have found over 30 years that the wire lasts much longer when not
placed into conduit!) This does not pertain to 110V wire, unless it is
rated for Direct Burial!
- What does the concept “less is more” mean in lighting terminology? The
paradox of landscape lighting is that "less is more". By
strategically locating fixtures around a structure, pools of light
contrast with dark areas. It is this inter-play of light and shadow
which creates visual impact.
- Where and how do I use Path Lights? Path Lights are used for walkways,
flower beds and ground cover areas. With a narrow sidewalk, stagger the
lighting from one side to the other; however, a uniform row of fixtures
works very well for a wide walkway or driveway
|
|
331
|
- What are Well Lights and Up Lights.
Well Lights or Up Lights are effective for aiming light up a
tree, column or facade; they should be located 1'-4' out from the trunk.
- What are Step Lights used for? Step
Lights illuminate risers so people can move about with confidence. As
the name implies, step lights are for risers and steps. Some step lights
can double as Deck Lighting.
- What are Directional Lights and what are they used for? Directional Lights or Down Lights aim
a beam directly at objects or things. They could be hidden under shrubs.
- How do I choose the right light bulb?
Achieve the desired effect with the correct light bulb. There are
two variables to be decided upon when working on your landscape lighting
plan: the distance the light must project; and the diameter and shape of
the area the light will illuminate. The distance a lamp must project is
a function of the fixture's distance from the tree, wall or sculpture.
The diameter and shape of the area the light will illuminate is a
function of the bulb's beam spread. Directional fixtures offer a range
of lamp wattages and beam spreads from Very Narrow Spotlight to Wide
Flood.
- What is the Transformer used for in a 12v Lighting System? The transformer is plugged or
hard-wired into a 120 volt GFI receptacle, and it steps-down the line
voltage to 12V low voltage. Our Catalog offers many different wattage
capacity transformers all UL listed for wet locations.
|
|
332
|
- How do I select the right Transformer size for my low voltage lighting
system? Having selected the fixtures and lamps, it should be easy to add
up the individual lamp wattage. A good rule of thumb is not to exceed
80% of the rated transformer capacity. For example, five path lights at
18W each together with three directional fixtures at 50W each add up to
240 watts total - a 300W transformer is perfect. Or you could choose a
600W transformer to give yourself leeway for adding fixtures in the
future.
- What does the term “single feed” mean? One cable exiting the
transformer. This linear arrangement is the most common approach. One
300W transformer with a 220W total load 110W per circuit). Recommended
maximum cable length is 215‘.
- What does the term “dual feed”
mean? Two separate cables exiting
the transformer (possibly one to the front yard, one to the back yard).
Cables may be unequal in length. One 600W transformer with one of the
cables maintaining a 300W total load (150W per circuit), and the second
cable maintaining a 200W total load (100W per circuit). Recommended
maximum length for the first cable is 150'. Recommended maximum length
for the second cable is 225'. Use 10 gauge wire for this type
installation.
- What is a “loop feed”? One continuous cable coming back
around to the transformer. One 300W transformer with 150W total load
(75W per circuit). Recommended maximum cable loop is 650 feet.

|
- What is the difference in color between Halogen and Mercury Vapor? Halogen Lighting produces a white
colored light. Mercury vapor lighting produces a bluish green color
similar to natural moon light.
- What is the average lamp life of Mercury Vapor? The lamp manufacturer has given these
lamps an average life ranging between 10,000 hours and 24,000 hours
depending on wattage of bulb.
- Why has my Mercury Vapor Lamp lost its original intensity? Mercury Vapor lamps do not operate
with a filament, and ignite with the use of a gas filled arc tube. Over
time the mercury vapor gas depreciates in the arc tube causing the lamp
to loose intensity and ultimately fail.
- What is the average lamp life of a Halogen Lamp. Professional lamps run from 5,000 to
10,000 hours for a 12v Halogen Lamp. Lesser quality manufacturers offer
less lamp life. We recommend Ushio!
- What type of light fixture is used in ponds with fish? We recommend composite materials,
however brass or stainless steel are great materials used in water or
under water.
- Why does my time clock always need resetting? The time clock is probably connected
to a power supply that is controlled by a switch. Each time the switch
is turned on and off it looses time and must be reset. Try connecting
the timer to another source of electricity. Power outages can also
cancel the times on time clocks. Check for these problems before
replacing timer!
- Why do my outdoor lights on a photocell blink on and off all night? Photocell controls operate by turning
on when light levels drop below a certain level. If a floodlight or
other light source is directed at the photocell it will cycle on and off
as if it were day and night.
|
|
334
|
- Why do my lights on a photocell stay on most of the day? The photocell is generally located on
the wrong side of the house or hidden by plant material. The best
solution is to relocate the photocell or trim the plants.
- How do you mount your fixtures to the trees? We install our fixtures using the
direct SS screw method for better adherence to the tree. The screws,
contrary to belief, do not hurt the tree or cause it to die. Using
special “back out” screws, the screws will back themselves out of the
tree as the tree grows.
- Why is the lens on my up light fixture white in color? This is due to a lime build up from
water condensed into the fixture and heated by the lamp. You can
periodically clean the lens with shower cleaner to remove the lime.
- What can I do to soften the lighting in my spa or pool? We have discovered a wonderful idea
that is very simple. Use 1 26w Blue Fluorescent Spiral Light Bulb in
place of the 500 watt light bulb you are currently using. This effect
produces the most beautiful pool lighting and uses 1/20 of the
electricity of a normal pool light.
You can use a dimmer on the light fixtures for your pool or spa
as well!
- How will my fixtures arrive after I order them from you? In approximately 2-3 weeks your
fixtures will arrive by UPS. Your landscape products will arrive in
individually packed cartons. Protective material surrounds each fixture.
Stakes are not attached, but are in the same box. An installation
instruction sheet is included in every box, and in the case of path
lights, the lamp will be in the socket. The cable, cut to your specified
length, is boxed separately. Ordered lamps and accessories such as
colored lenses arrive in their own cartons!

- In order to promote American made products most of our fixtures are
Made in the USA, or the parts are made in the USA and assembled in
Mexico. We are not fans of products made in China and rely on better
craftsmanship and materials to give our clients systems that will last
decades. Where ever possible, our materials do not come from Chinese
sources.
